The Time When I Was Mamadou
Hudson Theatres
( 01/07/2005 - 01/30/2005 )
The musical one-man tour de force The Time When I Was Mamadou will make its world premiere at the Hudson Mainstage Theatre. 5,000 miles from there, lives a red-headed, black, Jewish, gay Peace Corps volunteer who wants to save a West African, Muslim village from starvation, misogyny, and terrorism. This self-anointed prophet embarks on an ill guided misadventure to the core of the Sahara desert. Unexpectedly, his intended parish taunts, resists, and frustrates him as he attempts to outlaw the ancient tradition of goat slaughter, rally the women of polygamous marriages to fight each other for ultimate control, and create a National tour of Romeo and Juliet in a pre-biblical African language with an all female cast. Using story telling and song, the play reveals the shortcomings and strengths of a guy trying to do the right thing—albeit often in the wrong way.
